August 1, 2012...Busy day yesterday, Dusty arrived at 7am to work on the bathroom so Herb and I were up, dressed and out of there...Herb dug the garlic and I sat on my stool cleaned and piled it in bunches of 12 for him to hang in the lean-to shed...Then I went to Pat's for a shower and on to write group...Home about 2pm, very hot, Dusty left about 3pm and about 4pm a cool breeze came up and we sat on the deck for the rest of the afternoon...Pam joined us later so she could hear about our cruise...OWAV:)

July 24…We looked forward to our arrival  in Juneau today about 2pm…We pulled in as another Norwegian Ship pulls out leaving us a place to dock…Most of the people on board have signed up for shore excursions and will be departing the ship to explore the sights of Juneau…Shipboard feels like you are in the middle of a huge city, people, loud music and noise everywhere and we will be glad for the peace and quiet…Herb and I visited the duty free shops this morning and explored more of the ship…We found the bowling alley nestled in next to a "cave like bar"…The art gallery, spa's, gem shows and on and on…If you wish to spend money or have it to spend this is the place to come…For the most part anymore the cruise ticket pays your way to Alaska and the view of the scenery…It includes a buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner that if it happens to be hot when you take it off of the buffet, it is cold by the time you find a place to sit down and eat…Most everything else costs extra.

I check my cell phone as soon as we dock in Juneau and with 6 bars showing I place calls to Bobi, Rusty and Pat…(Everyone else we know is working) It is good to hear familiar voices and find that every thing is okay in Oregon…Our bathroom is demolished!!

H and I relax the afternoon away in our quiet spot, having a glass of wine, watching the activities of the shore surrounding Juneau…Four float planes are continually coming and going as they give sight seeing flights…We read, visit with the "crew" as they have more time to talk, with only a few of us left on board…Later M and J join us to take in the view and then it is off to visit the buffets, have a final game of cards and call it a day.

Calm out of chaos...52º

Awake at 5am, restless night with dreams of always trying to elude someone or something, never figured out what was after me...DAMN, I hate nights like that.

We or mostly Herb made headway with the watering and getting things back into place...Dusty pounded and banged his way in the bathroom and Don continued with the painting outside...I unpacked, balanced the check book, Pat brought iced mocha's and we sat on the deck, visited and caught up on each others news.

Today I'm going to write group and still waiting to hear if Dr Grandi got an MRI scheduled on my knee this week...2nd day of our cruise is below...OWAV:)

July 23…Breakfast buffet at 8am, a hugh display of food from granola to stir fry to bacon and eggs or omelets, breads and drinks…I know this will change a little everyday but I think the buffets may get a little monotonous by the seventh day, which is good because then I won't think I have to eat one of everything :)

H and I have an inside cabin (no porthole) which we refer to as the cave or dungeon etc…Actually it is very nice, but we do like to look our so are always looking for a possible quiet place on an upper deck where we can sit and read or just look…Not much scenery yet as we are surrounded by the sea and have over 500 more miles to cruise before we get to Juneau on July 24.

After breakfast we ( M,J, H and D) stopped at the card room (mostly quiet) and played a game of "5 Crowns, more commonly known as Gramma's game"…They also have scrabble (no one will play with me) and yahtze, clue, monopoly, chess etc…The library is next door for reading and browsing…Then we explored the top deck number 13, cold wind and all, to see where the track, putting green, climbing wall and other amenities are located…Don't plan on using these just want to know where things are…We stumble upon a cooking demo put on by the ships many chefs and listen to that before going to Lunch…Then we are back at the table eating…Herb and I found the Casino and next to it, a wine bar which has comfortable seats and a view…We spend most of the afternoon there while M & J nap…We watch and listen to a demo on the history and making of martini's and drink a glass of wine…M & J join us at our ocean view and Jerry spots a "school" of porpoise jumping for as far as the eye can see…"Name that Tune" is in progress so we listen to music and relax before dinner and the evening music program…We are entertained by a quartet who sings songs made famous by Frankie Valli (The 4 Seasons) in the 60's…They put on an excellent show to a packed house (1000 seats) and will be back for a short performance on Saturday afternoon before we finish the cruise back to Seattle arriving Sunday morning 8am…Entertainment in the Stardust Theater is free…Early bedtime for H and I, M and J staying up a little later…Hugs to All…OWAV:)

July 30, 2012...55º

Herb and I arrived home last night at 6pm...So glad to be home even though things are in a mess...Our house is in the finishing phases of being painted, bathroom is about half done but at least we have a new toilet installed and usable...Stuff is piled everywhere in the living room on the deck ... Herb unpacks the car (I'm still using a cane and knee doesn't seem much better)...I wander the gardens, cucumbers and zucchini are blooming, raspberries are ripe, garlic needs to be dug, lawn needs mowing and watered, weeds are growing but we have flowers blooming everywhere...Dusty will be here this morning at 7am to work on the bathroom so I must get this done and dressed soon...Day one of our cruise is below...OWAV:)

Main deck with swimming pools and hot tubs.
Sunday July 22…We were up about 6am, had complimentary breakfast at the hotel, and about 10:30am we hailed a taxi to take us to Pier 66 where the Norwegian Pearl was docked and we would embark on our Alaskan, Inside Passage Cruise…We were met at the dock by an official from Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) making sure we had tags on our luggage, with our cabin number, which he loaded on a cart and said they would be delivered to our "Cabin" sometime in the afternoon (It was a little scary letting go of our luggage like that)….Then he pointed down the street and said, "turn left at the overhead walkway"…We joined the crowd, followed the signs and directions, went through security then presented our tickets and passports and were given our room keys and cruise ship charge card…They want you to charge everything, no cash allowed!..After a short wait we were directed to the 4th deck (bottom of the ship) and our cabin…They are small but I'm amazed at the excellent use of the space and the size of the bathroom…I thought it would be like an RV bathroom but it is much roomier with a decent sized shower.

We arrived aboard ship just in time for lunch…Now food is what I've alway heard about in connection with a cruise, just plan on gaining weigh, with food everywhere and included in the price of the cruise…It is different on Norwegian (and maybe other cruise lines now) such as they have some all inclusive restaurants but others that you pay a cover charge to get into…Lunch ( a huge buffet) was very confusing with people in every line going every which way and all kinds of food to choose from…In the mayhem Herb and I got separated from Mona and Jerry…About an hour later after eating we found each other and decided we needed to unpack and take a nap.

3pm we had a safety evacuations drill and 4pm found us on deck 12 where most of the restaurants are, as well as swimming pools, hot tubs (filled with children as it is too cold to get in the swimming pools)…A cold wind was blowing and the music was very loud…We were there to celebrate the start of our voyage…We snagged a table with an ocean view, not easy to do even though we are surrounded by water…M & J order a pepsi, $2.25 each glass and we splurge on a special cocktail on this first day, H & D total of $17.75. (tax and gratuity already added)…An outdoor bbq was in progress, so Mona and I fixed plates for each of us to share, hamburger patties and skirt steak were very tasty and salads on the side.

At 7pm we were in the Stardust Theater where Cruise Director Julie gave us the highlights of cruising life and sights we would see this week…Music, dancing and standup comedy entertained us…H & I headed to our cabin to unwind, write, read and snoozed until 6:30am arrived with our morning coffee…This might be the first time we've ever ordered room service…OWAV:)

Seattle...57º

Herb and I left Joseph yesterday headed for Lewiston and a flight to Seattle...Since we were early we cruised around Costco, eating from the sample tables, then ordered pizza and a hot dog for our lunch...Dessert was a shared ice cream bar (covered in nuts)...Our plane left on time and an hour later we touched down in Seattle, met Mona and Jerry in the luggage area with a bajillion other people...We went looking for a taxi and ended up in a limo (flat rate of $45.00) to our motel Spring Hills Suites, close to the water front...Mona surprised us with tomatoes and cucumbers from their garden carefully carried all the way from Salt Lake City...We sliced and had them for appetizers before going to dinner, YUMMY...All of us had clam chowder for our dinner then an early bedtime...I'm having a difficult time writing this because three other people are constantly talking and interrupting me!..We board the "big boat" about noon today, sail at 4pm...Depending on internet on the Pearl I may or may not post this week...Hugs to All...OWAV:)

Mind Gone Blank?...52º

I've taken a little writing vacation this past week, way too many things going on...Finished up my week at Summer Fishtrap early because the "kids" were home and my time with them is precious...The week was sandwiched around my PT appts. acupuncture, a monthly book group and of course our weekly "Write People"...We spent many hours on the deck as a family, invited friends over and had a hobo cookout at the lake...Don the painter has been here painting our house and yesterday after the "girls left" we packed everything out of the bathroom as Dusty the carpenter will be gutting the bathroom and putting in a new shower, toilet, etc for the next couple of weeks. Chief Joseph Days starts this week and we are escaping for a few days so my posts may be sporadic...Hugs to All...OWAV:) PS...All my tests came back NEGATIVE.

Sunny maybe showers...58º

Physical therapy at 9am yesterday made us get up and moving...A quick breakfast for all, Rusty left for another horseback trip with John, Herb was at home to water, answer any questions from the house painter and close windows and blinds as the temperature climbed...The girls dropped me at PT while they went to Soroptomists and later picked me up to go to write group...We spent two hours at the City Park, mostly visiting about Summer Fishtrap and Cienna talked about her month at the computer camp.

We arrived back home to the smell of pork roast, ready to make pulled pork sandwiches for our dinner...Bobi made coleslaw and I soon had a rhubarb crisp in the oven, a belated Birthday treat for Herb, Rusty and Cienna...We spent the afternoon on the deck, just enjoying the rest of the day...Hugs to All...OWAV:)

Book Group...57º

With a slight change in plans, book group met at the "Red Horse Cafe" in Joseph...Seven of us gathered around an outside table, discussed "The River Why" and Summer Fishtrap, enjoyed a drink and scones on a lovely July morning...Bobi, Cienna and I returned home to rising sourdough bread and immediately fell into a routine of finishing up the mornings chores and then to the deck for leisure time...It doesn't take much to entertain us and pass another day together...Rusty fixed tri tip and bbq'ed veggies for dinner, Bob gathered fresh greens from the garden, made the salad and we slathered slices of warm bread with butter to round out the meal...Late in the evening Becky and John joined us for a visit, storms had threatened all day long but continued to part and skirt around Joseph...A game of Apples to Apples and then it was bedtime!

This morning I have PT in Enterprise, Ci and Bobi will go to Soroptomists then we will join the write group for our weekly meeting...I will read the following essay written at "Summer Fishtrap".

SCHOOL DAYS
It was September 1951. Summer ended with the last batch of relatives leaving after spending their vacation with us in our new home in Lake Fork, Idaho. They claimed that Lake Fork was even more beautiful than Yellowstone Park and they made plans to return the next year. Summer had been a glorious time for me, playing with cousins, nieces and nephews, riding horses, and playing in the river. Exploring this new place we lived in, in a make believe world of cowboys and Indians, outlaws and a sheriffs posse. We used our fingers as guns, saying, “bang your dead” as another outlaw or Indian hit the dirt. We fashioned bows, using fishing line for the string, sharpened sticks for arrows and cut thick willow branches to make the stick horses that carried us into the woods, up and down hills and finally back to the house when our stomachs signaled suppertime. When the 4th of July rolled around I got my own cap gun with a supply of caps and continued to bring law and order to the wilds of our ranch. The smell of the smoking cap gun remains in my nostrils to this day. Summer at nine years old was all play and no work.
Now I was excitedly looking forward to the coming year and the start of 4th grade. I had started school in December of 1950 at Wood Grove School; a one-room schoolhouse located two miles from our home. It sat in a grove of trees along side a narrow dirt road. Off to one side was a woodshed, next to the woodshed was a small 2 room teacherage and nearby were 2 outhouses marked HIS and HERS, partially hidden from view. I had settled easily into this new school, although it was much different than the city school I attended previously. Only 11 children ranging from 1st grade through 8th grade came on this first day in 1951.  One teacher taught all 8 grades and did janitorial duties, building a fire in the potbellied stove through the winter months, sweeping the floor each day and on a regular basis also treated the wood floor with linseed oil. Some of the older students, usually boys were assigned turns at chopping wood and carrying it inside to stack by the stove in the corner of the room. A hand pump sat near the front door where water was pumped from a well and carried into the anteroom for washing and drinking. All students drank from the same dipper, and hands were washed in a small basin of water and dried on a lone towel each day, before we ate our sack lunch.
On this particular September morning I walked into the now familiar schoolhouse, excited and ready for the new school year. My Mom and I had shopped for school clothes at the local mercantile; two pairs of jeans, 4 t-shirts, underwear, socks and of course sturdy brown oxfords finished the outfit. Shoes tight on my feet but with extra room in the toe, jeans rolled up only to be unrolled as I grew through the winter. I was scrubbed clean of all the summer dirt and my hair so clean and tightly braided that my eyes felt like narrow slits, like the eyes of a cat.
I stopped inside the door to breath in the familiar smell of linseed oil that made the rough wooden floor look like new if only for a few days. Rows of desks, clean and shiny were waiting for the students return. Naked blackboards lined an entire wall with the alphabet written above in capital letters and lower case. Hard backed erasers pounded clean, rested along side fingers of chalk, waiting for the new teachers hand. Newly washed, half curtains, the color of freshly churned butter, fluttered in the breeze as the door opened and closed with each student’s arrival. The scarred and battered upright piano sat quietly in its special place waiting for hands to caress its keys, when a special program called for music.
A large oak desk sat at the front of the room and our new teacher, Mr. Whittaker, stood there watching as we filed in. We stood in awe as he walked toward us introducing himself, asking our names and grade, then pointing to each desk where we were to be seated. He was a tall, portly man and seemed giant-like in comparison to last years teacher, a petite lady, who always brought to my mind a wilting flower, waiting for a drink of water.
Mr. Whittaker had moved his wife and 5 children 100 miles north to Lake Fork from Boise, Idaho after he was hired to teach at Wood Grove. We never knew why he left the Boise Valley, where the climate was mild and he had taught and driven school bus. Boise was the largest city in Idaho and now this family would be living in a rural community 3 miles from a grocery store and post office in a 2 room cottage, with an outdoor toilet, no running water, and only a small wood stove for heat. I wonder now, how did they manage, where did they all sleep but at the time I gave no thought to those questions. I only wondered will I like him, will he be a good teacher?
