Vine Ripened Cucumbers...49º

Unlike tomatoes and peaches, it is difficult to get an unripe cucumber...They are green and taste wonderful, no matter when you pick them...Add a little salt and they taste even better, sort of juicy and crunchy and fresh tasting...Only go bad, when you leave them on the vine too long, then you have cucumbers like they sell at safeway, old, punky and soft with a bad flavor...If those are the only cucumber that people have eaten, they are clueless.

We have a whirlwind week ahead of us...Cienna flies back home to Portland this morning after 5 days in San Francisco...Read all about her trip at http://travelingsquid.blogspot.com  Then she and her Mom will hit the road Friday morning, headed for Joseph for a few days before she goes back to school at OSU, mid September.

They will take a slight detour to pick up the 40 pounds of cucumbers that I have ordered from Edwards Farm in Milton Freewater...So along with the 75 pounds of tomatoes that are sitting around our house trying to get ripe enough to roast, I think we have our work cut out for us... My Mother would be in her glory, getting jars ready, cutting dill and grape leaves, peeling garlic and mixing up that pungent salt/vinegar brine...I see her now, with her take charge attitude, bustling around the kitchen...Oh the memories...Guess I better get busy...Hugs To All...OWAV:)

Tomato Time...51º

I have 75 pounds of tomatoes ripening up, getting just right to roast, sort of...I find it very frustrating, not being able to buy vine ripened tomatoes or tree ripened peaches...It seems that all growers now pick produce less than ripe because it travels better...That makes for better looking fruit when the buyer views it for purchase, but it doesn't say much for the flavor!..Buying peaches last summer, the peddler (not the grower) assured me that the peaches he was trying to sell me would ripen up sweet and juicy...He lied...I bought 2 peaches, took them home, kept them at room temperature for a week, cut open 1 peach, not sweet, not juicy...1 week later I cut the 2nd peach, still not sweet, not juicy, just a bitter tasting peach...I can't help but gently touch the peaches at the produce truck and at Safeway, but always they are hard as rocks...They will never taste like a peach should!!!!!

Sorry didn't mean to get on a rant but I'm sure glad that I lived in the day when peaches from my Mothers trees were tree ripened, sweet and juicy...Juice running off my chin juicy!...At least I have the memories.

Back to the tomatoes, they are getting a little riper everyday and soon I will slice them in half, lay them on cookie sheets, sprinkle with chopped garlic, basil, salt and olive oil and roast them for 3 to 5 hours...Then I will toast a slice of sourdough bread, cover it with roasted tomatoes, sprinkled with Parmesan cheese and yes with a little luck there will be enough juice to dribble off my chin...Hugs To All...OWAV:)

Our Girl, Cienna...40º

This girl knows how to have fun...Four years ago, at age 16, she spent 11 months in Thailand on a Rotary exchange...Upon her return home to Portland, OR. she enrolled in early college, where she got her high school diploma and an associates degree from Portland Community College...Now she is in her Junior year at Oregon State College in Corvallis, OR. and working at her home swimming pool in the summers, teaching lessons and coaching.

This week she is visiting one of her host sisters from Thailand, who is studying for a graduates degree in San Francisco...So far we have had photos of food, beaches, city streets, gardens and two girls having a grand adventure...Cienna will be posting in her Blog about her trip...Hugs To All...OWAV:)

More Baking...46º/ Raining

Herb was on his last loaf of sourdough bread from the freezer...I had been feeding my starter for the past 4 days, so yesterday was a perfect day for bread making/baking...The outside temperature was cool, our house was chilly...I had time to play around with some of the dough, so mid afternoon I cut off 1 1/2 pounds of the soft, stretchy dough and with the rolling pin made a long oval...Spread it with a mixure of garlic, butter, roasted tomatoes, then liberally sprinkled it with crumbled sharp cheddar and diced pepperoni and a smattering of fresh chopped basil...Rolled it up and cut it into 1 inch pieces...Aha, pizza rolls.

I made breakfast rolls last week, but they were lacking in flavor, my hope yesterday was to improve on that...They looked good, but the jury is still out on flavor, maybe they will improve with age...They looked good enough to eat!..And the bread turned out wonderful and smelled delicious...We shared a loaf with friend Cass and her family...More cooking is on the agenda today, it is cool and rainy, perfect for beef/vegetable soup...Hugs to All...OWAV:)

A few of the pizza rolls,
ready for the oven.

Our first rustic apple pie of the season.

Fresh carrots ready to slice and cook.

Conundrum...45º

Several months ago, after reading on FB that "Food Alliance" was looking for volunteers to help in the distribution of surplus/about to be outdated food, I called the number, mostly out of curiosity...I found out that the program was just starting up in Enterprise, it was open to everyone, no income guidelines, just show up, stand in line and choose a limited number of items from what was available on that day...They didn't need more volunteers but planned to open a site in Joseph, at a later date and more volunteers might be needed then.

Curiosity satisfied I went about my business until a few weeks later, I saw on FB that the Joseph site was to be opened at The Place in Joseph...Now I have to be honest here, was I attracted to this, because I wanted to volunteer or did I want something free?...A little of both I'm sure...Who doesn't like a "freebie."...So again I called the number...I showed up at "The Place," two volunteers were already there and they didn't really need any help, but I asked if I could stay and see how this process worked...Bread items, salads, veggies, and meat(frozen on its sell date) were displayed, for the taking...A few people showed up and more signs were put up around town to spread the word...I went again for 3 more times and always came home with one item...After the 3rd time, I left, saying, "If you need help, give me a call."...To be continued...Hugs To All...OWAV:)

A package of wieners, I brought home, put in
the freezer and yesterday I was
in the baking mood again...I
shared them with friends.

Oven Dinner...46º

Potatoes, carrots, onions and garlic all roasted in the oven, alongside leftover flat iron steak made a yummy dinner...Today I will made a potato salad out of the leftover potatoes, coleslaw from a newly picked cabbage and yet another green salad because the lettuce is staying lush and green...I love  making dinner from veggies, fresh from the garden...Not sure what today's meat will be.

Yesterday was a day for puttering around the house...Picking up, putting away, prepping fruits and veggies so they are easy to start a new meal...Sometimes I spend too much time in the garden, just "watching things grow," such a feeling of accomplishment...The flowerbeds are another story, they are looking a little bedraggled and I need to be out there cutting down and cleaning out!..Not my favorite job...Hugs To All...OWAV:)

Fresh from the garden.

Last nights sunset.

I don't like the smoky/hazy days
but I do like the way our

The Good Ole Days...46º

Chilly, chilly outside this morning, Herb can attest to that...He just came back in the house after hanging a load of wash on the clothesline...The sun is up but nothing is heating up very fast outside, supposed to get to 76º today...I think hanging clothes outside is coming back into vogue, as people try to use "solar" power and cut down on the use of electricity...Hanging clothes outside was the only option when I was growing up...They called it freeze drying in the winter, Mom would hang everything outside early morning, then later in the day bring it all back in the house (stiff as a board), and drape/bend it over every available surface and it would eventually dry...It didn't seem like an inconvenience, I just remember the fragrance that filled our house as everything dried.

Sometimes I don't have much control over what I write on any given day...I titled this post "fresh produce" but my mind went in a different direction and now I will change that to "The Good Ole Days." I wrote this essay several years ago and it seems appropriate.

WASH DAY IN LAKE FORK
I pushed open the back door, coming out of the cold into the warm house on a dark December morning.  I took off mittens, heavy coat and wool hat, then struggled with cold fingers to remove my buckled overboots. The milking and chores finished for another morning. Daddy followed me in from the barn, shedding his coat and hanging it up before he washed up for breakfast. Mom was busy sorting clothes but looked up at him and smiled, he gave her a quick hug as he walked by.
As the welcoming warm air of the house surrounded me the odor of lye soap permeated my nostrils; it mingled with the smell of ham and beans cooking for our dinner, on the back of the wood cook stove.
The washing machine stood in the middle of the washroom surrounded by dirty clothes; Mom had sorted the clothes into big piles of whites, light colors, darks and really dirty clothes. .  I washed up, started the toast and set the table, putting thick cream and sugar out for the oatmeal and coffee. Fresh side-pork sizzled in the frying pan.  We had hearty appetites after milking ten cows, separating the milk from the cream, putting the milk in ten-gallon cans, and into the cooler.  Calves, chickens, and pigs waited to be fed.  There would be more to do after breakfast, but for now we concentrated on eating everything Mom had cooked.  As Daddy added cream and sugar to his second cup of coffee, he said, Della you stay and help your Mother with the wash, I can feed the cattle and sheep this morning without your help.”
I quickly cleaned the table, did the dishes before going to the washroom. Mom had the washer filled with water, she added grated lye soap and started the gyrators before adding the first batch of whites.  I checked all the pockets a second time to make sure nothing had been left in them; maybe I would find some loose change that Daddy had missed.  Also I turned down and cleaned the rolled up cuffs on Daddy’s bib overalls, because they always had dirt and hay chaff in them. Mom didn’t want hay in her washing machine.  Mom was very particular about how things went into the washer; first, only lightly soiled whites, sheets etc.; then, light colors and continuing on until last came the really dirty clothes.  I loved running everything through the wringers, being careful to keep my fingers away from the wringers and folded the buttons to the inside of a garment, preventing them from breaking.  Everything went through two wash waters and two rinse waters, the whites going first into warm water, then into the second, hot water.
“Della, remember to turn the socks wrong side out for the first wash, then after going through the wringer, catch them and turn them right side out before going into the second wash. Otherwise they won’t get clean.”
“Yes, Mom I already did that to the first load and am almost through with the second.”
Ten to twelve loads of clothes waited to be washed.  On sunny days, even in the dead of winter clothes were hung outside. After the last rinse clothes were shaken, to get rid of the wrinkles, then laid out straight in piles. I picked up the first pile and put them over my arm, and with the clothespin bag tied around my waist, overboots, a heavy coat and hat on, I made my way to the clothesline.  Usually, in winter, the snow was frozen hard enough that we could walk on top of it.  If not Daddy had dug a narrow path and cleared snow from under the clothes lines. No matter how cold it was, I didn’t hang Mom’s washing haphazardly or mix things up.  Every towel, pillowcase or sheet hung together in a group very straight.  It took several trips and 3 to 4 hours before we finished washing. Now all four tubs had to be emptied by draining the water into buckets, and then dumped down the sink drain or in the summer we carried it outside to water flowerbeds.  Mom wiped out the wash tubs and rolled them back into the corner, placed a sheet over them and as she did I glimpsed a nostalgic look on her face.
“Mom, how long have you had this washing machine?”
“Oh, only a few years. Don’t you remember the Christmas in Utah when “Daddy” had them delivered on Christmas Eve?
“No, maybe I was too young to remember or I was only concerned with what Santa was bringing me that year.”
“Mom said, I was so surprised when the new washing machine arrived and it has made my life so much easier. The old machine had a gas motor that was stinky and hard to start and it only had one tub with a make shift rinse tub. I love this one with its two wash tubs and two rinse tubs in two units.” Then her mood changed as she said, “ Enough talk now, look at the time, Daddy will be in for dinner soon, please go set the table and I will be there in just a few minutes.”
Our dinner of ham and beans with huge slices of homemade buttered bread was eaten about noon, with a short rest afterwards. Later in the day, we brought in the washing, most of it frozen, stiff as boards.  It was then hung upstairs on lines, also downstairs over chairs in front of the wood stove.  After the sheets finished drying, we would remake the beds. I could hardly wait to have my bath and crawl between the crisp, fresh smelling sheets.
Afternoon over now and it was again time to milk the cows and do the same chores that had been done that morning.  Supper most nights was bread and milk with left over cold meat from another meal and home canned fruit from the cellar.  Bedtime soon followed because 5am came early.
Daddy had a surprise for Mom that year, when the day before Christmas an electric clothes dryer was delivered and installed.  Every winter, she treasured the dryer that made her life a little easier. But come spring, clothes were again hung outside to dry, because nothing smells better than a bed made with line dried sheets.  Unless, of course, it is the smell of lye soap mingled with the smell of ham and beans.

Afternoon on the Deck...57º

Friends from our Forest Service days, joined us for the afternoon...Gary and Herb both worked there, Faye and Pam worked together at Enterprise school and we got better acquainted when we all volunteered for Air Life (air/ground ambulance service) for several years...Now they are snowbirds and we try to get together when they are here for the summer.

Yesterday we ordered takeout pizza, I fixed salad and dessert and except for a run in with the yellow jackets, we spent a lovely afternoon, catching up/reminiscing about the "good ole days," when we were young, and the "joys of RVing," in our retirement years...Notice I didn't add "Doctors appointments and hospital visits" to that.

Someday I will learn to take photos of food when I get it prepared, because with the hubbub of people arriving, I forget the camera and just enjoy the company, while making sure that everyone is comfortable and has food and drink...So this morning, I find myself with no photos to go with this blog...Looking back to other years for a "stock" photo, none of the huckleberry cheesecake appeared...Following photo is what is left of a lovely cheesecake, my easiest no bake dessert, that is sure to please...Hugs To All...OWAV:)

Still Smoky Haze...51º

Huckleberry pancakes were on the menu yesterday for our breakfast, served with a slice of ham...It was kind of a lazy day, puttering, sitting on the deck, watering, dinner was beef and noodles...Not too hot, a quiet day, hope all is well in your part of the world...Hugs To All...OWAV:)

Lots of Noise, Little Rain...52º

Yesterday dark clouds moved around the mountain range that surrounds our valley...Late afternoon, Pam and I sat on the deck visiting and watched the billowy white thunder clouds stack, one on top of the other, building up to an electric storm...They grumbled and rumbled, moved slowly and after dark put down lightening strikes off to the East...Time will tell how many fires were started...Only a small amount of rain fell here.

I worked in the flowerbeds, early morning, cutting down and cleaning up...Took a few photos of the llamas that are now in our pasture eating the green grass before fall sets in... In the afternoon I played in the dough again, making beef and noodles for dinner...It was a good day, pleasant temperature, slight breeze...Hugs To All...OWAV:)

Typical August...61º

Wind blew, thunder boomed, lightening flashed, a few sprinkles of rain...That was overnight, wonder what today will bring...Sun just coming up, a brilliant pink glow in the East...With any luck, no fires were started and our valley is cleared of the smoky haze of the past month.

It was a quiet day at the museum yesterday, maybe 7 people browsed the exhibits, none wanted to visit...They were there for one last stop, before heading home after a few days at Wallowa Lake...We get many comments that the museum is well done and they enjoy a glimpse into the past at the hard work of our early pioneers.

Herb and I had our favorite summer casserole for dinner yesterday, one I made up called, "Mock eggplant Parmesan."...It is made with grated zucchini, mixed with egg, fried into patties, layered with cheese and roasted tomatoes, heated in the oven...It is yummy!..

Last nights music was "Brass Fire," a band from Pendleton OR...Trumpets and trombone along with saxophones, guitars, drums, violin, and keyboard...Strong voices along with the instruments made for a rousing evening...The temperature was wonderful, a bit windy, but the rain held off...Only two more concerts for this summer series...I so enjoy Thursday night music, all summer long...Hugs To All...OWAV:)

Smoky...60º

Although we have no fires near us, our valley continues to be shrouded in a smoky haze, that covers the mountains and actually helps to keep the temperature lower, but very bad for the people with respiratory problems...We have possible thunder showers in our forecast for today, hope it is not dry lightening because our forests are tinder dry.

Kind of a ho-hum week, watering, cleaning, mowing and not much cooking, made possible because we have lots of fresh veggies in the garden and melons from the produce truck...I made salmon patties yesterday to go with patty pans, cucumbers, tomatoes and later we ate melon.

In the frying pan

On the table

I volunteer at the local museum this morning, so have to get moving and make a zucchini casserole, ready to go in the oven when I get home about 1:30...That's life on Barton Heights, mid August...Hugs To All...OWAV:)

Sunday Baking...47º

The photos in Cook's Country magazine, of "Spicy Cheese Bread," captured my attention...The memory of fresh baked bread from my childhood urged me on and the thought of oozing cheese, garlic and bread dough cinched it...I mixed the dough, actually followed the recipe and soon had the small batch of dough, proofing in the microwave...(heat water to a boil in a 2 cup measurer, turn off the microwave, and add your bowl of dough...Now your dough will raise in this warm moist environment  in record time.)

A basic roll dough spread out into an oblong, sprinkled with pepper flakes, dotted with small chunks of fast melting cheeses and sautéed garlic chunks...Roll up like you were going to make cinnamon rolls but instead of cutting, pinch all the edged together, and roll the "log" to lengthen it and then roll that into one big spiral loaf...(I opted to make two smaller loaves out of the dough).

They were beautiful going into the oven and fragrant and lovely, coming out of the oven...Since Becky was home alone this weekend, we invited her to come for the taste test...This bread was good but I really need more practice getting the cheese to melt just right and the dough was very nice but a little too sweet for my taste...It would be fun to make for an appetizer, add a bottle of red wine and friends...Probably won't take too much practice to make a loaf that disappears quickly...Hugs To All...OWAV:)

PS...Yesterday since the weather had cooled off, we made the 2 hour drive to Lewiston, Idaho and the Costco store and dinner out...We do that about 3 times a year, doubt that we save any money but it is a change for us and we are so happy to be back home!

Pepper flakes on top, chunks of cheese and hot sausage inside.
Sesame seeds on top, cheese and garlic inside.

Pull apart and devour.

Relief...46º

A few weeks ago, I was wishing for warmer nighttime temperatures, so the garden would start producing...This morning I'm grateful for the low 46º overnight, our house is totally cooled off and we slept with the quilt over us...Now we can keep the house cool, as the temperatures start upward again...I don't think it will reach the 100º mark this week...My wish came true as the patty pans are flourishing, (I started leaving them on doorsteps yesterday) zucchinis are also...A cucumber a day helps to fill our dinner plate, along with carrots, peas and an occasional purple tomato.

Yesterday I made stuffed patty pans for dinner...Leftover tri tip mixed with roasted tomatoes and asiago cheese, baked just enough to heat them through...Made enough to share with Becky and Pam as we had a short visit on our deck...Wonder what I will fix for dinner today...Hugs to All...OWAV:)

PS: A recipe caught my eye yesterday...A spiral "cheesy" bread loaf with pepper flakes scattered throughout, might give it a try...😊

Stuffed patty pan, onion, cuke from our garden,
cantalope and corn form the produce truck.

Staying Cool...103º/Friday high...63º/Friday night low

It is not often that we have so many hot days and nights in a row...We spent most of our time using as little energy as possible, kept fans going day and night and stayed inside...Cooler today, but warming up again next week, but not so hot...Hugs To All...OWAV:)

Scorching Hot...62º/100º

I don't remember many 100º days in Joseph, and now we have two in a row coming up...Yesterdays official high was 94º, but I couldn't resist taking a photo of our thermometer on the west side of our house, as the sun made its decent...Should go even higher today...We kept the inside of our house below 80º, (with fans going) so spent a comfortable afternoon inside.

Rusty left early yesterday morning, to beat the heat, and we did our morning chores early...Doing the same this morning and just thankful for a well insulated house...Stay cool friends...Hugs To All...OWAV:)

Busy Weekend...51º

Expecting Rusty home for a few days, found me in the kitchen making salads to complement a BBQed pig...Reckless Kelly was playing a concert here on Saturday night August, 4th, and Russ had invited friends to come for the weekend...It was a full house for us, adding 5 guests, 2 dogs and Rusty...The oldest ones' of the bunch claimed bedrooms in the house, while younger people set up a tent in the backyard...B & B, from Bend, brought the portable bar and set up in the garage, C, (the daughter) a bartender, by trade, from Boise brought her expertise and ingredients for her latest drink, the "Whiskey Sour," revived from the 60's...B & B also brought a home raised pig for the BBQ and everyone brought more food...Friday night we had hamburgers, sausages, salad, dessert and drinks...Saturday found us on the deck, after a breakfast of biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs and fruit, the tantalizing aroma of BBQed pork soon filled the air.

Everyone seemed content to enjoy our peaceful surroundings on Barton Heights, where we visited and laughed until mid afternoon, then dined on delicious pork, corn on the cob and salads...Cody (from, Reckless Kelly) and B & J joined us for dinner...Slowly our crowd thinned as the younger people walked a few blocks to Chief Joseph Rodeo arena, for the concert and H & I headed for bed!

Sunday morning, people slept in and all were very quiet, some ate leftovers, others tea and toast...Vehicles were packed and guests were on the road home by 11am...A long drive ahead of them...H & I enjoyed the weekend, it is good for us to have a break in our routine.

Most people were camera shy but I managed one photo, Buddy had a brief moment, at the table...Hugs To All...OWAV:)

Summer Squash...50º

Summer squash, snap peas and raspberries are ripe for the picking in our garden this week, also lettuce, onions and beets...On the other hand, pole beans are struggling for some reason...We are keeping things well watered in this heat.

Yesterday I started amending the plot where the garlic had been...Herb hauled a wheelbarrow load of manure, which I spread, along with old leaves and alfalfa pellets, covered all with a layer of straw before giving it a good soaking...I will keep adding layers into the fall and next spring it will be ready to plant.

Rusty is coming home for a few days, I have the "honey-do" list waiting...Actually the "Back Country Bash" is scheduled for this Friday night at the rodeo grounds in Joseph...The band "Reckless Kelly" will be playing...Rusty has known them since they started out in Bend in the late 80's as the "Prairie Mutts."

Rusty's only request from me for the weekend is a batch of rolls, guess he thinks I need more practice...Hugs To All...OWAV:)

Tomatoes?...61º

Early spring I bought 2 tomato plants at BiMart...The tag Indigo Rose caught my eye and I thought, why not, might be fun...These were developed at Oregon State University...We ate our first one yesterday, they are hard to tell if they are ripe because they are very purple...It was okay, will see if any of them really mature in our weather (this heat will help), the two bushes are loaded...Hugs To All...OWAV:)
