Fun at the “Funny Farm.”

Debbie and Tim have an assortment of animals; cattle, llamas, sheep, goats, dogs and cats…The goats have “kidded” out except for one, sheep have started “lambing” and will finish, just before the cattle start to “calve.”…Mid to late winter is a busy time for them and a time of little sleep…Debbie does the daytime and Tim has the night shift.

Yesterday, the last day of January, was another “stellar” day, warm sunshine, blue skies…I’m surprised the photos turned out, as I seemed to always be facing the sun and wasn’t sure of what I was shooting.

We met Pam there and spent over an hour, cuddling, petting and watching as the kids frolicked around the pasture, enjoying the suns’ warmth…I hope you enjoy the photos, as we enjoyed making them happen…Hugs To All…OWAV:)

Friday...28degs

Friday…28º

It was a lazy kind of day, due to some inflammation in my knee, I did a slow 5 minutes on the “mean machine,” and lots of stretching…Breakfast is a combined effort for Herb and I, he preps the fruit of the day…This time of year apples, oranges, grapes, and bananas are our choices…We try to follow the seasons, but occasionally pears, melon, pineapple will be included…An egg/veggie scramble provided protein.

I did some sewing in the morning, before starting dinner…Oyster stew was on the menu and since it is a simple meal, I also made quick drop buttermilk biscuits, (very much like “Red Lobster biscuits,”) and Waldorf salad to complete the meal…Always good on a wintery day.

Hard to believe that January is almost over, the full moon has been beautiful and soon the ground hog will forecast the rest of the winter…(I’m not much of a believer in this old custom!)…Hugs to All…OWAV:)

Bread Making Day…28º

Wednesday was kind of dreary, so a perfect day to make bread…I got an early start and went with yeast instead of sourdough…I planned to make wiener wraps and wanted them ready for our 3pm dinner…The dough was soft, stretchy and shaped easily around the wieners…It brought back memories of lunches at school, when we hand rolled over 400 of these to feed about 325 kids…They loved them!

Along with wiener wraps, the dough was shaped into hamburger buns and oblong buns that we use for french dip sandwiches…Two round loaves used up the rest of the dough and go in the freezer for another day…In between stretching and folding of the dough, I worked on sewing projects…I must get this posted, as the “Mean Machine,” is calling me…Hugs To All…OWAV:)

Stellar Day... 28º

Stellar Day…28º

In this case, “stellar” means exceptional…Herb and I “broomed” about an inch of snow off the deck, sidewalks and steps…The sun shining brightly soon dried everything off and the sky turned an incredible blue…The sun warmed the air like spring, but if the breeze came up, winter reappeared…This kind of day is why we love and spend winters in Wallowa County…Hugs To All…OWAV)

Dental Done!..25º

Luckily the filling was small, but the deadening is always large!..I arrived back home, almost two hours later with the left side of my face and all of my tongue numb…Hard to talk, eat or drink when your tongue doesn’t work.

I soon had a rice pack heating, then a cup of my home canned beef broth from the cellar shelves, also heated…Ensconced in my recliner, iPhone, laptop in reach, I caught up on scrabble and finished a jigsaw puzzle.

I was rudely interrupted by an alert from Consumer Cellular that I was about to max out the data on my phone…What the Hell!..We have the lowest plan possible and usually never come close to the limit and this company will automatically update you to the next plan without extra charges so it really wasn’t a big deal, except, I wanted to know where I had incurred the extra minutes…I’m sure the “representative” thought I was drunk or crazy, when I’m trying to explain what has happened and my tongue doesn’t want to work.

Long story short, I’m locked out of my CC website, since I decided to make some other changes, which led to making a new password, which should be easy, but never is!!! Now i’m waiting 24 hours to put in a code and try again for a new pass word…In the meantime I shut off the data on my phone and the only thing I can think of that used data was…I read a book on my phone and our wifi must have gone off and left me reading on data?..Hugs to All…OWAV:)

Working Out…23º

So far the “mean machine” is getting some use in the basement…With Pandora on my phone, I can walk on the treadmill to music, makes it a little less “painful.”..Yesterday, Rusty interrupted Pandora when he FaceTimed me and the 15 minutes flew by…Hmmm, that seemed better but it is difficult to talk when i’m huffing and puffing…Herb is getting some time in, on the “MM” and he also walks outside and gets some fresh air.

Not much happening here, Herb is on the first waiting list and i’m somewhere down the line for the COVID vaccine…Still no actual date scheduled…I have a dentist appointment this morning, a small filling?…I’ve heard that before, wish me luck.

I have a new/old sewing project going, hot pads again but with some new fabrics…It makes it more fun and  gives me something to do besides cooking and cleaning…Photos later…Hugs To All…OWAV:)

Chicken noodle soup. 32degs

Chicken noodle soup is wonderful for these dreary winter days or if you have a cold or flu…It is even better if made with homemade noodles…Many people think making noodles is time consuming and difficult…That is really not the case…As with any recipe you need to have ingredients on hand and assembled before you start mixing.

You will need broth, chicken (canned, leftover or rotisserie) veggies including celery, onion, carrots, for the soup…Flour, egg, and salt for the noodles.

A basic recipe for noodles is, 3/4 cup all purpose flour, 1 extra large egg, 1/2 tsp salt…Put flour in small bowl, add salt and egg…Mix slowly incorporating all ingredients into a stiff but soft dough, adding more flour if needed…Put dough ball into a baggy and set aside while you dice veggies and start the broth to heat…Set up a clean place on your counter to roll out the dough, use extra flour liberally for this process…Break the now “rested” dough ball in half, stretch and flatten then roll (with a rolling pin) and turn, roll and turn adding more flour until you have a sheet of thin dough…Using a pizza cutter (wheel) cut dough into narrow strips then cross cut if you want bite size noodles instead of long noodles, add more flour if needed and lift and drop small noodle pieces into a loose pile, repeat with the remaining dough.

To the boiling broth add diced veggies, return to boil, add noodle pieces slowly and stir and separate, while the broth continues to boil…Reduce heat to a simmer, cover but watch (so they don’t boil over) and simmer for about 15 minutes until noodles and veggies are cooked, add chicken pieces…Soup is done!

Sorry this is a long list but if you are a newbie, the directions will help….Hugs To All…OWAV:)

Double Sunset…25º

Last evening, looking out the living room window to the East, reddish sky appeared…I snapped a photo, then went out back and looked West to our mountains for the real sunset…Somedays we get an Eastern sunrise and a Western sunrise, at least that is the way I look at it.

Busy day for the Allen’s, we take our turns on the “mean machine,” then breakfast and on to acupuncture…A pot roast will be slow cooking in the dutch oven as Herb also has a follow up doctor appointment mid afternoon, then we will come home for a hot dinner…Hugs to All…OWAV:)

Who gets shot next?..32degs.

 Who gets shot next…32º

The biggest news in Wallowa County…We’ve had an uptick in COVID but not too bad…COVID vaccine has been administered to all “first responders,” and was scheduled to start on all the people 65+ and I think people in the education field, next week.

On the advice of our doctor, I called for an appointment and was put on a wait list…It seems our county had been receiving 100 doses a week, since late December and it appeared that, that would continue…But apparently the supply has slowed down (on the National Government level) and thus so has our local supply.

Yesterdays update said, (my interpretation ) “All the appointments made for this coming week for 65+ will be erased and a new list of people 80+ will be started,” and vaccinations will resume when more vaccine is delivered to Wallowa County.

I don’t envy the people who are in charge of scheduling, who have to call people to cancel appointments and calling people 80+ to schedule an appointment…Sounds mind boggling to me!..Hugs To All…

Dreary day turned sunny...24deg

Our day started off with a few minutes devoted to what I will call from now on, “The Mean Machine,” in the basement…Breakfast came next, then Herb feeling good decided on a short walk outside and continued to exercise by throwing wood into the basement wood room…He was on a roll.

I on the other hand, did the usual household chores…I’ve been trying to use up “stuff” in the refrigerator  freezer and a bag of frozen bananas jumped out at me…Its been awhile since we had banana bread…Four small loaves soon cooled on the kitchen counter and the smell beckoned Herb and I to sample.

Moving right along, Tuesday, when I made bread I saved out a pound of dough, letting it age in the fridge…Now I stretched it into a pizza crust, covered with plastic, left it to proof for several hours, while I  mixed cream, fresh lemon juice and garlic to simmer, browned sausage, diced frozen roasted tomatoes, sliced onion, olives, artichokes, red pepper and grated cheese.

Mid afternoon, I layered all the above on the crust, baked for 20 minutes, Pam joined us and we feasted on pizza and crudités dipped in blue cheese dressing…Dreary outside but good food inside…Hugs to All…OWAV:)

It was very good.

Ready for the oven.

Not much leftover.

UGH exercise. 20degs

I’ve never been a fan of indoor exercise, I love the fresh air, mountain breezes, sun in my face kind of exercise…For many years I walked, (Pam or Pat were my faithful buddies.) bicycled, skied on a regular basis, until a virus hit and I lost the balance function in my entire body…(inner ear virus)…I have continued to walk on and off for years and last summer pushed myself to work hard outside in the gardens...It felt good.

Everything came to a stop when winter started early in November, water therapy was on again, off again because of covid and I was content to give myself a rest, and then, we were gifted with a treadmill…UGH

It is set up in our basement, and a promise made that if we find it being used as a place to hang clothes, store our hoard of toilet paper and paper towels or just to collect dirt and dust, it will be hauled to the dump, no charge!

Herb and I have both made a commitment to do at least 5 minutes twice a day and work up from there…We are on day 4…Hugs To All…OWAV:)

Night Lights…43 deg.

Last year with Pam’s help we strung led lights in the kitchen for a night light…Liked them so well that I bought more this year to light the stairway/living room…Then I had an old set of Christmas lights (clear bulbs) that she put up along the ceiling in the bathroom and finally last week, we put a string upstairs in the landing area over the north windows…They work individually by remote control…I guess you could say we are now, “well lit.”…It sure helps old people on the nightly trips to the bathroom.

We had crazy, high winds all through the night, a few times, I thought we might end up in Kansas with Dorothy and Toto!…Hugs To All…OWAV:)

Winter Sunshine...27degs.

Yesterday dawned clear and cold with 1 to 2 inches of snow on the ground…Herb and I were out early “brooming” snow off the deck, steps and sidewalks…By noon the sun had dried everything off and warmed the day.

I finally rolled up Christmas lights, packed everything in a box and Herb got it upstairs, so it could be put away…I sorted some to donate to Soroptomists and am slowly getting the rest repacked and stored for another year.

Leftover soup and toasted cheese sandwiches satisfied our hunger for another day…The sun is always a mood enhancer and we look forward to the same today…FB posting, said Fergie (local ski area) will be open today, with barely enough snow…I miss those days…Hugs To All…OWAV:)

A new dish...30degs.

Using the recipe on the manicotti box, I substituted ingredients on hand…Cottage cheese for ricotta, frozen roasted tomatoes for jarred spaghetti sauce, mozzarella cheese for parmesan and frozen meatballs for mushrooms…I assembled all of these uncooked ingredients…Tomatoes as the bottom layer, then manicotti shells, stuffed with meatballs and cheeses (kinda messy), covered all with the rest of the tomatoes and a final layer of mozzarella cheese…Baked for 1 hour on 375 degs…I was pleased!..It cooked through, without being overdone, and came out in serving pieces, not soupy at all and it tasted very good!

Can I recreate this recipe on another day, maybe, maybe not…As i’ve said before, I have a hard time following a recipe…Hugs To All…OWAV:)

Oven is working...29degs

Our day went well yesterday…H and I took all the Christmas lights down, from the front porch, moved them to the living room to warm up so today we can coil/fold and put away for another year.

With the oven repaired, I went ahead with plans for a soup and pie dinner…I cubed beef stew meat, sliced and diced veggies, put all in crockpot, added broth and set it on high…Using a thawed crust and filling, the pumpkin pie cooked to perfection and set to cool before I left for water therapy…We don’t usually have pumpkin pie in January, but I had halved our Thanksgiving pie, and froze half of the ingredients…This worked well and is better for us to eat smaller servings…Pam joined us for dinner and cards, helping us eat the pie and give us some social interaction.

Water therapy went well and I shopped for our weekly groceries while in Enterprise…The weekend is ahead of us and the weather has remained mild, waiting with bated breath for a big winter storm…May or may not happen…Hugs To All…OWAV:)

Snow overnight...30degs

A snowstorm overnight brought little snow here, but hopefully it is building up in the mountains, where we need the snowpack.

Yesterday we had good news in the afternoon, when Josh arrived with the new oven element…He had it installed and heating the oven in no time…I’m doing a happy dance as I can start baking again…My first test of the “new” oven will be a pumpkin pie, with frozen/thawed, pie filling from Thanksgiving.

Water therapy and grocery shopping will keep me busy today and Herb will keep the wood stove going, so it is toasty warm, when I get back home…He is so good about keeping kindling chopped to build fires and wood ready and waiting to feed the wood stove,  which he does on a regular basis…Sure can’t beat that kind of heat.

We have had a spike in COVID cases here, over the weekend, but it was expected after the Christmas/New Years holidays…Now if it will level off and drop more with vaccinations being given, maybe there will be hope for a better year in 2021…The political scene is still crazy, who knows what will transpire there!..Hugs To All…OWAV:)

Down in the dumps. 37degs

5 days into the new year, finds me with little or no ambition…Christmas decor still in piles, waiting to go back upstairs where it resides until December…About my only accomplishment is a batch of sourdough English Muffins, not bad for a first attempt but they need more practice...The oven part should be in this week and installed so I can bake/roast again.

My new years vow of kindness, has gone into hiding as i’ve been grumpy/cranky, out of sorts…Maybe caused by too much time on devises and not enough physical activity…Maybe todays session at WT will help and tomorrow’s acupuncture will give me a boost in the right direction…Is this the January Funk???

With all that said, I must get up, get moving, think positive, start dinner in the crockpot so food will be ready this afternoon and work on being nice…Hugs To All…OWAV:)

English muffins

Breakfast, muffin with peanut butter and strawberry jam.

Easy dinner, baked potato covered with chili.
