Sumpter Train...49º

Weather was perfect as we left Wallowa County for a day trip to Baker City and beyond to the Sumpter Valley Railroad...Pat planned the trip and she and Brian invited us to go along and celebrate Fathers Day 2012.

Sumpter Steam Engine

Our Train was Robbed
Gold Dredge
Brian drove for 3 hours to arrive at the McEwen Station where we boarded the train and chugged via steam engine for six miles surrounded by the mine tailings of years ago when this valley was dredged of all its gold...When we arrived at the Sumpter Station we had an hour to explore the area and visit the rebuilt Gold Dredge..Soon we boarded the train for the return trip, seated in a refurbished, covered car away from the ash and hot sparks spewing from the engine.

Brian and Herb taking a Break
It was nearly 1pm when we pulled back into the McEwen station, climbed back into the car, retraced some of our morning route on our way to the Haines Steak House and their special Fathers Day dinner...Drinks in hand we toasted all around to an interesting day and eagerly filled our plates from the stage coach salad bar knowing that our steaks and prime rib would soon arrive...Arriving back in Wallowa County we all agreed that this had been a memorable day and worth the 6 hours travel time to make the trip...Hugs to All...  OWAV:)
