Sidelines...54º

Not totally on the sidelines yesterday but not quite in the middle of things..Seven "students" showed up to take the class on preserving food...Some of them volunteers, paid workers, or interns already familiar with the "Magic Garden," one guy and two ladies, members of the community...Ages ranged from 8 to 60...I knew what would be demonstrated but nothing else...Robin lined us out to get the space ready and prep done to be ready for the students...(We were using the Joseph Charter School, Home Ec room.)This was to be a hands on class for the students, so kitchen aid mixers, cuisinarts, measuring cups, spoons etc were set up for easy access...I won't go into a lot of detail but will tell you that zucchini bread was made by each student, under Betty's tutelage and turned out delicious...Robin demonstrated making beet relish and sweet pickle chips, with students doing the grating, peeling, chopping, slicing and dicing...Each student and instructor went home with jars of pickles, loaves of bread and an up to date "Ball Canning Book"...I mostly filled in to keep spaces clean, kept the canners at a simmer or boil, sterilized the jars and chimed in occasionally with a hint or two along the way...Students were happy and most of them plan to return next week for another session.

I arrived home after 5 hours on my feet to the smell of spaghetti, ready to be warmed for my dinner...A welcome glass of wine completed my meal...I was beat but glad I participated and happy to see the interest shown in canning and the combined efforts of the Magic Garden and the Joseph School giving people the opportunity to learn a new skill.

Flashback Saturday features Cienna as a 10 year old at Wallowa Lake and below at 16 on a beach with new friends in Thailand...Hugs To Cienna...OWAV:)
